丹特（罗伯托·贝尼尼 Roberto Benigni 饰）是一名公交车司机。他活了一辈子没有遇见过一件好事，爱情爱情惨遭抛弃，工作工作又不值一提，穷困潦倒却整日浑浑噩噩。一天，一位搭乘他所驾驶的公交车的美女吸引了丹特的注意，这位美女每天都在同一时间上车，同一站点下车，随着时间的推移，丹特开始想入非非起来，觉得自己和这位神秘的美女之间有着天注定的缘分。
美女名叫玛丽（尼可莱塔·布拉斯基 Nicoletta Braschi 饰），她可并非什么善男信女，而是黑帮老大的妻子。玛丽发现丹特的样貌和自己的丈夫极为相似，而丈夫最近惨遭帮派追杀，于是生出了让丹特来做替死鬼的念头。
