1848年，意大利独立战争期间的米兰，一个小偷凯纳佐（阿德里亚诺·塞兰塔诺 饰）趁着战乱逃出了监狱，遇到了年轻又天真的面包师罗莫洛（恩佐·塞鲁西科 饰）。两个人忍着饥饿在米兰街头闲逛，目睹了奥地利人的侵略、贵族的反抗等一系列历史事件，也荒谬地被迫卷入这场战争。他们经历了滑稽的爱情，也遭到了不幸的背叛，还曾正义地拔刀相助。两个人也逐渐成为了挚友，并见证了上流人士的虚伪及麻木。就在这时，他们遭遇了战争的无情打击……本片是意大利恐怖片大师达里奥·阿基多唯一一部非恐怖题材的影片。
