影片讲述了出生在偏远农村的王宝根，人品纯朴，爱憎分明，痛恨社会上各种欺骗行径。为了实现自己去大城市赚钱的梦想，二十出头长相酷似王宝强的他，第一次孤身一人准备走出农村去省城当一个建筑工人。他在车站买票遇到骗子，车票被调换，糊里糊涂辗转到了一个陌生的小城市。之后，又被两个小偷盯上，钱包被偷，悲惨地流落街头，期间发生了许多搞笑却又泪点满满的故事，而这一切都因为他长得太像当红明星王宝强……
