Facebook- the relationship status thing

April 14th, 2010

How did we announce engagements, new romances and break ups before we had Facebook? This week I noticed two couples had become engaged (and pressed the "like" button, because I liked the news).  Pressing the like button caused one of the women to send me an apologetic message- she had been engaged for several months but had only just updated her status.  I had seen her several times and it hadn't crossed her mind to tell me in person.

Having got married long before the invention of social networking sites, I never had to navigate the awkwardness of when and if to update my status from "single" to "in a relationship."  Do couples agree this together beforehand? "One, two, three ENTER.  We are official!"  What if one person thinks they are in a relationship and the other thinks they are sort of dating? This is a minefield that I am glad I don't have to walk through.   Having said that, it is a great way of keeping tabs on my friends and their romantic exploits.  Congratulations Ed and Helen- I "like" your engaged status!

Fast-forwarding several years I wonder if when we are old some our status updates will read things like "My new zimmer frame has just arrived" or "In hospital on drip" lol.....yet to see what an elderly generation might post up as updates! (BTS isn't is "Phenomenon"?)

We'll be part of groups called "I hate it when I can't find my teeth" and "Can anyone remember my name, because I need to know it to get my free bus pass. " And our grandchildren will all be networking via some yet-to-be invented technology and will think, "Aaah. The old dears think they are so with-it."
